Parent Community Representatives
As an AEMP Parent Community Representative
(PCR), you are the person who brings together parents, teachers and
school administrators to form partnerships around increasing student
literacy and overall achievement in school. You are the glue that holds
the partnership together.
Your responsibilities are many and varied. Your job cannot be done alone.
To be effective, you will need parent volunteers and support from AEMP
staff, teachers and school administrators. You will have many opportunities
to use and expand your leadership skills as you carry out your AEMP
responsibilities.
The duties of an AEMP Parent Community Representative are listed below
and are grouped into four (4) categories which will be explained in
the following sections:
Coordinating
the Operations and Functions of the Parent Information Center
Coordinating Parent and Community
Education
Participating in Educational and
Leadership Development
Providing Direct Support for Classroom
Instruction
COORDINATING
THE OPERATIONS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE AEMP PARENT INFORMATION CENTER (PIC)
- Coordinating
the daily operations of the PIC and being responsible for monitoring
and maintaining equipment.
- Developing
and maintaining the PIC Resource Library containing books and
learning materials for students, parents and teachers.
- Actively
recruiting parents to become involved in AEMP workshops, activities
and other school-support functions.
- Participating
on the School Site Implementation Team (S.I.T.).
- Developing
and maintaining information to document PIC activities during
the year for the Parent Information Center’s contribution
to the School-Site Implementation Portfolio.
- Maintaining
regular communication with the PIC Teacher Facilitator and school
principal.
- Serving
as a resource for parents at the school.

COORDINATING PARENT and COMMUNITY EDUCATION
- Presenting
and/or coordinating educational workshops on topics that will
help parents help their children improve their acquisition of
Standard English.

Presenting or identifying speakers for workshops on topics of
interest to parents such as: Parenting, Supporting language
development, Reading to your Child, Nutrition and Healthy Food
Preparation, Making Cultural Items, etc.

PARTICIPATING IN EDUCATIONAL AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
- Becoming
knowledgeable of AEMP goals and program components
- Understanding
the role of parents in literacy and language development

Attending the AEMP "Parents as Partners" Summer Leadership
Institute
- Attending
Bi-monthly AEMP Parent Community Representative Educational
and Training Meetings
-
Participating in the AEMP Weekend Professional Development Conference

PROVIDING INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT
- Providing
reading activities in the classroom and PIC for students
- Coordinating
the AEMP Literacy Backpack Program at the school
- Coordinating
storytellers and other cultural performances for student
- Developing
and coordinating student classroom projects and special activities
focusing on increasing cultural awareness
