AEMP
Grade Level Collaborative Instructional Units
Reading requires that readers draw upon their personal
knowledge in order to make meaning of text - therefore, literacy learning
environments for SELs must establish linkages between the home and school
cultures. School literacy experiences should be built around the language
and experiences the child brings to school. Standard English Learners
must be provided opportunities to add school language and literacy to
their repertoire of skills using instructional approaches that validate
who they are, and build on the learning styles and strengths they bring
to the classroom.
Because reading is an extension of the language skills children have
already acquired, and because being read to is often not a part of SELs’
early literacy experiences, Standard English Learners will need opportunities
to engage in and see school literacy practices demonstrated. They must
also be provided opportunities to validate, build upon, and learn to
appreciate their own rich language and literacy heritage.
The AEMP Grade Level Collaborative Instructional Units
are researched based instructional practices that have been proven efficacious
to the development of language, literacy and learning in SELs. The ten
units are centered on the following six critical instructional
approaches:
Enhance teachers’
knowledge, understanding and positive attitude toward variant language
forms in SELs.
Integrate
linguistic knowledge about the languages of SELs into instruction.
Utilize
second-language acquisition methodologies to support the acquisition
of school language and literacy.
Employ
a balanced approach to literacy acquisition that incorporates phonics,
language experience and access to books.
Design
instruction around the learning styles and strengths of standard English
learners
Infuse
the history and culture of Standard English language learners into the
daily instructional curriculum.
The AEMP GLC units are to be delivered monthly at grade level meetings
conducted at the school site and incorporate follow up activities and
teacher collaboratives.
