Instructional Approaches
Approach
# 6 - Infuse the history and culture of Standard English language learners
into the daily instructional curriculum.
The
SEL's cultural and linguistic differences may result in school socialization
and adaptation difficulties that are often cited as the basis for differing
achievement levels.
Incorporating
the student’s history and culture into the school program constitutes
a significant predictor of academic success (Cummins, 1989).
Teachers need to:
Be
cognizant of the cultures represented in the classroom.
Know general aspects and
values of student's cultures.
Understand the principles
of "culturally responsive and culturally relevant" teaching.
