Instructional Approaches
Approach
# 3 - Utilize second-language acquisition methodologies to support the
acquisition of school language and literacy.
Second-language
methodologies have been shown to be effective with Standard English
language learners. (Johnson- Montonyo-Harmon)
Teachers
need to:
MESL (Mainstream English as a Second Language)
Provide
opportunities to hear the target language (MAE) modeled.
Use instructional
conversations to provide students opportunities to use language interactively.
Negotiate and clarify meaning
throughout each lesson.
SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English)
Activate and use student’s
background knowledge.
Use visuals, manipulatives,
and graphic organizers to explain concepts.
Question appropriately
(using referential questions, wait-time, comprehension checks.)
